I havent picked up a copy of Rolling Stone in god knows how long, - TopicsExpress

I havent picked up a copy of Rolling Stone in god knows how long, but as a lad I considered it mandatory reading. And so we say a hale Happy Birthday to the man who cofounded the magazine. Jann Simon Wenner was born on this day in 1946 and turns 69 years old today. With jazz critic Ralph Gleason, Wenner launched the magazine in 1967. He had borrowed $7,500 from both his own and his soon-to-be wifes family for startup capital. Wenner and staff built the magazine from counter cultural touchstone to Media Empire. His career has been controversial and criticized. But it seems breaking hearts and kneecaps and doing people dirt is often an occupational hazard for successful empire builders. In 2017, Knopf will publish a Wenner biography (written by Joe Hagan) to coincide with Rolling Stones 50th anniversary. If youre interested: bit.ly/HagantowriteWennerbio Say what you want about the guy, but hes last of a breed. Forever gone are the days of empires built upon print magazines. Now, I know what youre thinking. Youre ready for me to post Dr. Hook & the Medicine Shows 1972 art-imitates-life-imitating-art hit, The Cover of Rolling Stone. And I use that convoluted and many dashed modifier because in one of the March 1973 issues, after the song had its chart success, Rolling Stone DID put Dr. Hook on the cover. But Im going with Neil Youngs Crime in the City (Sixty to Zero Part I) from his 1989 LP Freedom. One of the verses suggests the trajectory of Wenner, his main magazine and a lot of other artifacts from the sixties. Summer of Love innovation and optimism somehow matured into predictable and boring corporate hegemony. Go figure. That shit didnt happen to Mr. Young, though. The artist looked at the producer. The producer sat back. He said, what we have got here Is a perfect track. But we dont have a vocal. And we dont have a song. If we could get these things accomplished Nothing else could go wrong. So he balanced the ashtray As he picked up the phone And said, send me a songwriter Whos drifted far from home. And make sure that hes hungry. Make sure hes alone. Send me a cheeseburger And a new Rolling Stone.
