I hear theres a new musical group called The Ditch Lillies playing shows around here nowadays...... The Ditch Lilies Michael W. Updike I was standing out in my front yard plotting my next move on a day of cutting grass, trimming up and so on, when a lady from the local ladies garden club pulled up and started to speak to me. She said it’s so nice to see this old home and property get fixed up and somebody living here again. She talked on and on about how the elderly lady who had once lived here had a nice garden and flower beds and things were just so beautiful in Spring and Summer. I told her I had a vegetable garden, but I really didn’t take the time for flowers and such. Struggling to find something else to say to continue the conversation with the lady, I saw some tall orange flowers growing in the culvert by the hard road. I said, “There’s my flower garden, aren’t they pretty?!” She looked around at them and said, “Aww, they’re just ditch lilies!” We finished our conversation and she moved on out the dirt lane and slipped off down the black-top. I thought about how the flowers looked so pretty and orange mixed in with some purple wild flowers and Black-eyed Susans and Jonquils and thought, man, just because of where they’re growing, they’re not considered beautiful and not respected. It reminded of that little stucco house I was raised in, down by the Norfolk and Southern Railroad tracks. Like the ditch lilies, we were treated differently, a little less than equal simply because we grew up in a poorer section of town. Well, the sun is shining and I’m gonna raise my head up to the sky, just like the ditch lilies, and smile up towards the Good Lord and let the ones who would look down on me explain it to Him one day.
