I heard fascinating info on CBC yesterday about plasmid DNA surviving a ride into space and the fiery re-entry back to earth. In the study, they painted the plasmid DNA onto the exterior grooves of a rocket and significant amounts of these plasmids were able to pass their genetic information to other bacteria even after the rocket reentered the earth atmosphere. The plasmids survived 128 degrees of the reentry. The space travelling DNA remained intact and was able to transfer antibiotic resistance to E. coli bugs, which than became drug resistant. So this should dispel any doubts that Superbugs in sewage will be destroyed in anaerobic digesters or if the effluent containing them enters the sea. scientificamerican/article/dna-can-survive-reentry-from-space/
