I just finished reading the first volume of William Wirt Henrys - TopicsExpress

I just finished reading the first volume of William Wirt Henrys biography of his grandfather and towards the end of it came across this interesting passage. Shortly after Patrick Henry was appointed the first governor of the state, before the delegates were adjourning, they debated and voted on what wartime powers should be put in the governors hands while they were in adjournment. Some people were perpetuating the rumor that Mr. Henry himself was asking for extended, dictatorial powers. According to accounts, Archibald Carey, who apparently believed that Mr. Henry was behind the move, cornered John Syme - Patrick Henrys half-brother - and said, I am told your brother wishes to be a dictator; tell him from me, that the day of his appointment shall be the day of his death - for he shall feel my dagger in his heart before the sunset of that day. Kinda makes beating each other senseless with walking sticks on the floor of the Senate seem like CIVILIZED behavior, huh?
