I just learned today of the passing 2 days ago of my cousin Oscar. He was a year younger than me and the same age as my brother. Its not clear what the cause of his death was, but Im suspecting it starts with a C from the indications of the obituary and judging by a few recent pics I saw on another cousins Facebook feed. Growing up in Thunder Bay, my brother and I spent a lot of time with Oscar and his family. We lived close by for a number of years, so wed always go swim at the pool across the street from their house or just go and get into trouble harassing the kids of the German family that lived down the street from them. Oscars younger sisters were often targets as well. My brother and I were always amazed at how Oscar managed to make them crazy. I remember one time he attacked poor Lisa with a plunger, but we couldnt help but laugh our heads off as she vainly tried to escape the merciless plunging of her back, her gangly legs flying in all directions like a helpless spider girl. It sounds awful, but it was all in fun and typical sibling abuse for most kids from our generation. I dont want to think about the horrible things we did to their poor dolls or the terrifying messages wed leave on her Light-bright screen (but I cant help but snicker inside remembering it). Oscar invented my most favourite slogan from our childhood - Evil Counts! Every time we concocted some new trick, wed give each other a knowing wink and justify it all with that phrase. In a way, I still keep that in my heart to this day. I didnt get to see Oscar since leaving Thunder Bay. We went our own ways. Hearing of his premature passing, however, brings back a lot of memories of crazy fun and childhood mischief and it was kids like Oscar that probably inspired characters like Bart Simpson. Rest easy, cousin.
