I just returned from the BFI where Tony Gilroy, (Michael Clayton, the Bourne Franchise,) talked about the life of a screenwriter. Gilroy started out as a muscian in a band, dropped music cold turkey after 10 years on the road, then became a bartender for 6 years before selling his first script. Likeable, self-deprecating, with a just touch of retro hippy cool, Gilroy spoke entertainingly about the fear every writer experiences when sitting down to confront “the abyss that opens at the other side of the desk”, of the “self-cruelty” and “ego-mania” in the writer’s make-up and how much easier it is to write dialogue than a good action scene.
