I just started watching True Detective today, and something occurred to me. There has been a boost of sorts in popularity of series made by cable networks. The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, True Detective, True Blood, etc, are not produced by mainstream tv networks. The Walking is getting so popular one of the Big 3 networks are considering a prime time friendly version for broad cast. But back to what I was saying: The only shows popular on regular network tv are reality shows, sitcoms, game shows, news magazines, cop shows, and talent competitions. In the case of reality shows, no writing is involved. You only need a gimmick. Cop shows follow the procedural or whodunit formula, sitcoms are the same, characters and situations in them change, etc. The only original stuff Ive seen lately is on HBO, or AMC, or Showtime. Even the weather channel has reality shows. Really? The Weather Channel? Thus endeth the rant.
