I just watched the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special at the cinema. Aptly titled The Day of the Doctor, which I might mention some spoilers to, was freaking spectacular! At least to a Doctor Who fan as myself, it was one of the best stories Ive ever seen. There was a fun little interactive part before the movie began: one with Strax detailing Sontarana cinema etiquette, and another with the Matt Smith and David Tennant iterations of the Doctor. It had a usual plot thread of an alien invasion of Earth (the return of the somehow even freakier Zygons) with a grander story set around the last day of the Time War; the brief yet powerful scenes of the Time Lords defending against multiple Dalek attacks was genuinely cinematic in scope. The show itself usually has a cinematic sense, however, this was even more true with the Anniversary special. John Hurt is excellent as the aged version of the Doctor, whom was deeply involved in the Time War until he had lost all hope for his planet. He brings an erudite and authoratitive tone to the Doctor, which he hasnt truly possessed since the Fourth (speaking of which: best cameo ever at the end!). (Bigger spoiler>) Select clips of the previous Doctors, that didnt appear directly were utilised to implement them into the plot. Including a short shot of Peter Capaldis eyes, who is evidently the 13th Doctor, although that is yet to be confirmed. All of the already, actively portrayed Doctors appeared all together and in their prime; this was among some of the increased special effects. (
