I just went to get a coffee from the Marriotthyattcontinental lobby and I watched a young lad of maybe 6 or 7 push the tower of paper coffee cups over on to the floor. “ Oh Sergio” said his Father, don’t do that and he picked the cups up and put them back on the table. And of course as soon as his Father had put the cups back that Sergio did it again. There was no “telling off”, just an acceptance that Sergio was a naughty boy. How times have changed. I remember the time when I was of a similar age I decided to have fun with a toilet roll. We were on holiday in a place called Ilfracombe in the beautiful county of Devon in the UK. We were staying at a bed and breakfast and I clearly remember going into the guest house bathroom on the top floor, tucked the end of the toilet paper roll into the back of my underpants and saw how far I could get through the guest house before it snapped…………quite far actually………………..right up until I was reprimanded by an employee………..and that’s when my arse had a close encounter with my Dads size 10 shoe. I am old fashioned, I know that and in many ways I am proud of that and if Sergio’s Father had threatened to introduce him to his shoe……………I promise he would he wouldnt be knocking those cups over again.
