I know Ive been watching Doctor Who since I was at least 4, because my first clear memory of the series is the Patrick Troughton story The Abominable Snowmen back in 1967. I always regard 11th January 1975 -- forty years ago today! -- as the day I became a full-on, lifelong Doctor Who fan, though, because that was the day I bought my first Doctor Who book, Doctor Who and the Auton Invasion by Terrance Dicks. I was running some errands with my dad one Saturday morning, and didnt even know Doctor Who books existed until I came across this one on a revolving book rack in a newsagents in Marsh, Huddersfield. Enraptured by the big, tentacled monster on the cover, I snapped it up -- and was further thrilled, when reading the back cover on the way home, to discover that this was, in fact, the story containing the living shop window dummies, which had utterly terrified me when I was 6! I read the book two or three times that week, and then the following Saturday went back and bought the other Doctor Who book Id seen on that revolving book rack - Doctor Who and the Day of the Daleks. On telly Tom Baker was just beginning his tenure as the Doctor, and meanwhile I was reading all about the Doctors past adventures. A love affair with the show began that day that has never dimmed.
