I know that some people STILL do not comprehend the on-going - TopicsExpress

I know that some people STILL do not comprehend the on-going significance of 9/11. The anniversary impacts me significantly every single year. When I pause to remember that morning, it is shocking to me to realize how much time has passed. Faith was only three years old and had just begun her first week of preschool. Ben was only a year old, toddling around. We were in McDonalds, just minutes from a military base, because I had a casual meeting to attend. Because I was a busy mom with small children, I didnt watch TV in the morning when we were preparing to be somewhere. However, as we arrived at 9am, the women I was meeting said, Wow, a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. We talked about that for a moment, but, because I had little ones with me, we got into the business of our meeting. As things drew to a close, something was happening in the main part of the restaurant. As soon as we left the play area, there was panic in the air. Shock and fear were visible on everyones faces. I went outside, and it felt like I walked onto a movie set. People were frozen...standing in the middle of the parking lot...sitting in vehicles with radios turned up. (This was before the Internet was on our phones or Facebook.) The only source of information was the TV channels or the radio. I begged some strangers to tell me what was happening. And I felt my blood run cold. Fear roared over me like a tsunami. I knew this was no cluster of accidents. We were under attack, and I was just minutes from a military base. I felt lost. I ended up going to a friends house, and we spent the day watching the news, letting our kids play, protected by their innocence. All the horror was beyond my comprehension. Bob was stuck in another state. He could not fly home, so he made the trip by rental car. We were so very grateful to be an intact family. Many years may have passed, but the impact has not. I will keep talking about this every year because we need to never forget. As Americans, we have grown complacent. Please, remember the terrible loss and the sacrifice. Please remember that there are people, many people I love, still actively standing in the way of another 9/11. Please, never forget.
