I know this will sound like Mr Curmudgeon of Royal Tunbridge - TopicsExpress

I know this will sound like Mr Curmudgeon of Royal Tunbridge Wells, but I dont care. The combination of BBC dumbing down and jobs for the boys has reached a new low. I can repress my feelings no longer... This from Ben Stephenson, the BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning, no less: We are working towards striving to be as ambitious as we possibly can. Will someone please tell this man, (who is the custodian of commissioning broadcasts to build upon our extraordinarily rich heritage of drama from Shakespeare to Ayckbourn, Goethe to Chekov, Aeschylus to Fugard, and thousands more who embellish our culture with their work) that the English language is a precise tool and not a blunt instrument. The language is capable of saying almost anything you want it to say, but only if you know how to use it. Either he is ambitious or he is not. Working towards striving to be as ambitious as he possibly can means that he is not in fact ambitious. This is Orwellian double-speak, saying the precise opposite of the message he intends to convey. Why would he adopt this mealy-mouthed posturing? Ben is responsible for the commissioning of all drama programmes on television and online. His priority is to work with the best of British talent to make projects which will appeal to the BBCs different audiences and to ensure that licence fee payers receive a range of quality and original drama. According to the BBC website, he earns £247,800 per year. We are paying his salary. He is semi-literate. How did he get this job? Who ARE these people? Why do we have to tolerate them? Hrrrrrumph...
