I live in Finland. Most americans would call this a socialist or even a communist country which it´s not. The common american fear of communism sounds hilarious to us who live next to former Sovjet Union. You might have heard about brand names like NOKIA and Marimekko. They are Finnish. Finland is a western democracy. I´m a single mom with two teenagers. I have a job with averige finnish wages. I pay 25% of my income in taxes, the richer pay more (up to 50%), thee poorer pay less . It may sound a lot, but let me tell you this: I broke my wrist a few years back and I was taken to the hospital where it was put in a cast. I had to pay about 50 us dollars for the ambulance ride and the care in hospital. Two years ago my knee was operated and I was on sick leave for three months. No disaster. If my child gets sick the care is free. The school is free with a free nutritious meal once a day. The college is free. Univeristy is free. Even poor kids can go to university if they have the head for it. If you get sick and find yourself in hospital the only thing you have to care about is getting better. I can tell you that I gladly pay my taxes because I get so much in return from the state.
