I lived near Selma at the time of the Edmund Pettis Bridge walk. I remember the fear that pervaded the atmosphere but was too young to understand it. That has to be the one of the worst days in our history but at least it got the country to focus on the problems of segregation. Looking back at the footage of the attacks still makes me sick to my stomach. John Lewis still remains one of my heroes. I highly recommend reading his book Walking with the Wind to better understand that time.
