I lost some followers overnight. I have no clue why they left. Maybe they just wanted recipes? But maybe they didnt like my support for Brittany Maynard. And, if thats the reason that they left, that makes me sad. Because above all else, what I hope to create here is a place of respectful, engaged dialogue ... exploring. I believe that that type of discourse can occur on the internet. Indeed, I believe its something that must be intentionally cultivated on the internet because thats where a great many of our personal and political conversations are happening here in 2014. I also believe that the ability to engage in respectful discourse is a skill that must be modeled, taught and practiced. By following only the people with whom we agree, or by leaving conversations which provoke us, we fail to flex our engagement muscles and they atrophy. Here we are, on the eve of important national elections in the US, at a time when we need more instead of less engaged discourse. So, if you disagree with me, please dont leave. State your case with respect and civility. You will make our conversation more robust and we can all grow together.
