I love the song. Its beautiful to listen to. Canada has always had some pretty awesome reggae-ish stuff, and this is no exception. My problem, however is with the lyrics and story of the song. Yes, Ive seen the Fathers Response cover, and Ive got even more major issues with that that mirror my issues with the original (patriarchy, daughters being the property of their fathers, etc. - Ive been over these issues a lot), but my beef, at the moment, with the original is that the guy is a whiny little biyotch. Why the frak are you showing up at my house on Saturday morning? There are important sports and things to consume on my television. Okay, so yeah, Ill talk to you. You want to marry my daughter? Alright, does she want to marry you? Well, my daughters her own person. Ask her. Oh, you want my blessing? Nope. Nuh-uh. Sorry, kid. I mean, my daughter is her own woman, but if you want me to lie and tell you both that I think youre a good match for her, yeah, nah. Now Im being rude? Im answering a direct question. You asked; I told you, No. Sorry boutcha. Youre gonna marry her anyway? If shell have you after this little tiff between us, which is, once more, HER decision; not mine, and not yours. So go propose. I wont wish you luck, but its your right to try. Just leave me alone. Im gonna go finish watching the game now. Peace.
