I once asked someone to differentiate between football and rugby; his exacts words were “football is a game of gentlemen played by hooligans while rugby is a game of hooligans played by gentlemen” Being an ardent football fan and player, I told him off we instantly became enemies, but I had to swallow my pride when I got to attend to a rugby event at the Nanyuki Sports club the day before yesterday. It was the launch of the 10-a-side rugby tournament by Heineken at the Sports club on Thursday, with an exhibition match of Nanyuki Jackals playing against the BATUK, officiated by the Kenya rugby sevens coach Mike “Tank” Otieno. The match kicked off on an all high, with the BATUK drawing first blood following a first minute try down the left. The BATUK team toughed it out to hang onto a precarious lead as a moment of individual brilliance from John Smith separated the two sides for much of an attritional contest held in wretched conditions, pushing the score to 12-0 by the end of the first quarter. The Jackals came back rejuvenated in the second quarter, an Ibrahim Imboch try and a conversion by John Ochino had the tables turn, with the score reading 12-14 in favour of the Nanyuki Jackals by the end of the second quarter. Both teams defence held firm in a scram laden third quarter, with no alternation to the score line. BATUK had initially adapted better to the greasy conditions and forced two conversions in the last quarter of the game, holding firm to their 26-14 advantage to the final whistle. Everybody then proceeded to the reception for a bite and sip whilst listening to the speeches, the meal and drinks courtesy of The Nanyuki Sports Club. The main event is scheduled for 28-29th of this month with various teams confirming their attendance; the teams include- Nakuru RFC, Mwamba, Queens, KCB, Homeboys RFU, Nanyuki Jackals, Nanyuki Airforce, Blackblood, Voi JKUAT, Eldoret RFC, Embu RFC, KEMU (meru), Dedan Kimathi RFC and Embakasi Aviators. Also in attendance is a visiting team from the United Kingdom. Preceding the main event is the children category, with several schools confirming participation, they include; St. Christophers, St.Moses, Braeburn, Nanyuki Primary, orbit (Nairobi), Lewa, One team (Samburu). and Tunajivunia kuwa wanananyuki fb fans
