I pull up at Aldi last night (10/4/14 at about 5:10 pm) to see from the peoples behavior that something is very wrong. When I step out of my vehicle, I see an elongated pool of blood slightly larger than the size of my encircled arms and a short path of blood leading to a woman in a wheelchair. Fire department was first on the scene. The scene was not contained. (No yellow warning tape put up. Lots of people were exposed to the blood, stepping over it mostly (including me), but as I entered, I see that a few people were not mindful of it...stepping IN what appeared to be a faint stream of blood that her wheelchair wheels left weaving back and forth across the aisle floor.) I walked back to speak to the young man (30-something, maybe. white guy) who was wearing a jacket with the Aldi logo on it. I asked him if he worked there. He said he was the manager. I told him that there is a long stream of of blood going into the store, and he said yes, Ive called for it to be cleaned up with bleach. Feeling a little uncomfortable about this, but not really knowing what to do besides get out of their way, I continued to mindfully walk over the faint bloodstream to do my shopping and found that the stream went all the way to the back of the store. She had apparently been bleeding/leaking blood for some time. I warned others of the bloods presence along the way so they wouldnt step in it. In about 3 minutes, an Aldi employee came out with an industrial floor cleaner (a push machine the height of my hip that looks like if they added a seat it might be a riding lawn mower.) When I exited the store, I saw that the sidewalk was wet and a lot of water was running across the parking lot. I did NOT smell bleach or any other chemical. I talked with my boyfriend about the proper procedure for something like this, bc with my informal, cursory HAZMAT experience, I thought hed know more, having worked with his own citys fire department. He was alarmed and said that the proper protocol had not been followed. What now? Who should be notified?
