I rated Gulaab Gang (2014) 2/10 #IMDb What a sad silly film! What was the producer & director thinking? The film can be summarized in the following events done repetitively or say on loop: 1- someone (most of the time males) commits an offense. 2- the gang beats him 3- the gang starts dancing and singing It is very 80ish and boring. What was the message of the film that the makers wanted to send? Woman empowerment? It was missing, actually it was adverse. If the film is anything it is a disgrace to any female. Was it supposed to be entertaining? Not one bit of entertainment was there! The film did not have a story. Direction is terrible or else who would take a serious subject and commercialize it in that horrible way? We are supposed to relate to the characters of the gang, feel sad for them when someone will die. You will not relate to any of the characters. They are very superficial. Have no story behind them!! I will not ask what are the songs doing in this kind of film because we all know who is the reason behind their presence!! Acting: Madhuri Dixit is supposed to be the leader of the gang. The amount of scenes that were made to show her power of leadership in the film were numerous yet she fails totally to take advantage of them in her favor: 1- she does not have the aura of leadership, means she fails to show it off on screen. Leadership needs aura to convince the viewers that the woman is in control not just by scenes but also by just the walk in a scene. In Madhuris case it felt any time she walked she would explode to one of her jhatkas and matkas!! You want to see leadership aura then watch Sridevi or Rekha. These two talents have all what it takes for it. Remember Sridevis first walking scene in Laadla? The moment she enters the office you know who is the boss! The woman has the aura for it. 2- her look, another failure she was criticized for it, the caked face, makeup and the hair. It all was fake and plastic. 3- Voice modulation or to be specific the lack of it. She was just playing herself (of course like always she does) her voice had no command at all. As if she was reading the script! The lady cannot act. She cannot enter into the character. Watch any of her other films or even interviews! Her voice tone is the same in all of them! 4- Dancing fixation, that is an issue that is haunting her for eternity. How would you be convinced with this character when every now or then she wants to dance? What is this? There is another scene where a child was singing ek do teen (Tezaab) and Madhuri aunty blushes! It felt as if I was watching Jhalak Dikla Ja where contestants would shower Madhuri Dixit with their scripted compliments and Madhuri aunty responds who? Me? Then she gets up to dance. meh!! Juhi Chawla: a new character for her, yes she has fewer scenes than Madhuri but her presence is so strong that shows you it is not a supporting role as it has been said. 1- her look for the character was appropriate, she acted nicely as a corrupt politician. 2- the characters arrogance was very funny at times that it reminded me of Hema Malinis behavior in one of the youtube videos that went viral. 3- thank god she did not have to dance too. Lol. 4- leadership aura: I wont say she got it, but she fares way better than Madhuri Dixit. Her grins, devilish smiles added charisma to the character. 5- sometimes she was loud but I guess that is what the film makers wanted from her. Loud sometimes yes but never annoying. Juhi Chawla in this film has more screen footage than say Tabu had in Virasat. Tabus role was not considered a supporting role. I would rather think Juhi as the lead of this film than a supporting actress. If it was not for her this film would had zero perks. Gulaab Gang must be the worst Bollywood film I have seen in the past two years. The blame would go to Producer, director and Madhuri Dixit. I would say to Juhi Chawla congratulations for outshining everyone and everything in this film. I would say to Madhuri Dixit mubarak ho aap ka third flop comeback.
