I read an interesting post last night on being lonely, how so many people were suffering feelings of isolation, how our country is becoming anti-social, impersonal---creating health problems, depression, in large numbers of people. Of the hundreds of comments, most agreed. Some stated that just being alone was not the same thing as being lonely. Others stated that their loneliness was a painful, numbing experience leaving them incapable of change. Some seemed to wear their loneliness like a banner. The majority of the comments were complaints----with few suggestions for relief. Kind of sad, considering that the article suggested that people who didnt suffer from loneliness lived longer. While on the one hand I couldnt imagine why these people didnt get a cat-----on the other it made me think about what a person does to break out of the growing feelings of depression. While, granted, there are valid physical, mental disorders that can cause or intensify a persons condition, complicating a persons response, it would seem that for the majority of lonely people that some relief could be found in first becoming aware that the feeling is at a level where it is becoming a problem---and then making an effort to do something to stimulate change. Turn the television off. Take the blanket off your head and get out of the corner. Realize that the person sitting next to you deals with much of the same feeling---and getting out of your own gloom can happen when you learn to help those around you. Be the change you want to see. Do something. Speak first. Stop waiting for everything to drop into your lap. Being lonely is often a self-inflicted behavior. If that fails, I have a kitten for you. Maybe two, if you need two. But if you take them---you must be willing---you must love them, be responsible for them, care for them. They are not the solution---that comes from within you. You are your own cure.
