I read the obituary of Claudie Dial in todays issue of The Fayetteville Observer. If you never met Claudie, you missed a most interesting man. He was mostly without formal education, drafted into the US Army infantry in World War II where he explained his objection to carrying a weapon against his fellow man. Claudie was granted a hearing where he explained his reasoning and requested to be a named as a Chaplain. They laughed at his suggestion and noted his lack of education. His response was simple: I have 13 years at Jesus feet, not 4 years in seminary. He was transferred to the medical corps and was in a mobile hospital near the Battle of the Bulge. He was the hospital chaplain. Claudie was a skilled builder and did extensive mission work in Central America after the war. Back home he built and started churches. Of course an education is most important in todays world, but it would be a better world if the uneducated were more like Claudie.
