I realize that most sources are saying that Robin Williams was depressed. I think it is extremely important to acknowledge that many believe the depression he was suffering from was a part of a struggle with bipolar disorder. Having bipolar disorder can shorten someones lifespan on average of 9 years and 1 in 5 people with bipolar disorder commits suicide. It is an incredibly tough & widely misunderstood illness. Finding the right practitioner to help is imperative. There is also a LOT of shame involved in bipolar disorder. Many people who struggle with it feel like they have to hide because they will be judged from family, friends, employers... I hope one day this illness will be accepted as an ailment, not a flaw in character. SO, if you struggle with a mental illness, please know this is a safe place. Also, if you know someone who struggles with a mental illness, realize its not their fault and try to learn as much about it as you can so that you can help them as best as possible.
