I really have nothing against those who decide to shop on - TopicsExpress

I really have nothing against those who decide to shop on Thanksgiving. I really never thought celebrating the fact that our ancestors invaded this land and pretty much eventually wiped out the inhabitants was something to be proud of. But, in my familys household as I know in many others, we gave thanks for each other. With our busy schedules and long distance travel, it was rare to all be together at one time, but at Thanksgiving, we were all together. The house just smelled good on Thanksgiving Day. Mom had been in the kitchen since early in the morning and my Dad had been feeding the fireplace almost as long. So there was this rustic, wood, rolls, pecan pie aroma filling the air which just made you hungry. It was a special event. We knew that because we ate in the dining room and used Grandmothers antique china and silver. Something we only did twice a year - Thanksgiving and Christmas. Once all the members of our family arrived we jammed in around the long, rectangular table, passing the venison, rabbit, duck or whatever else we had in the freezer from that season. And we had side dishes like wild rice, brussel sprouts, candid yams. Sometimes there would be toasts and even us kids got to take a sip or two of the wine. I remember lots of laughter. Laughter to the point of tears at times. Many times there would be a roaring fire in the fireplace and after dinner wed adjourn into the living room to sit by the warm, crackling flames while we reminisced about our family and those who had gone before us. It was a tradition. And now, as I get older and see the family that once was so large, now shrinking, I realize just how precious those days were. Dont waste them buying junk that will last only a few years. Create memories with your family that will last a lifetime.
