I recently made the transition from Correctional Officer to Assistant Manager at Walmart and now Im an Algebra teacher at what is considered an underprivileged high school in Montgomery. With this territory comes a lot of behavior problems like that Ive seen in prisons. Some of this behavior stems from several outside stimuli. We are seeing everyday on the news and fb about heinous crimes being committed right under our noses and to me it seems like the world is choosing to ignore it. I was asked to come speak to another teachers class on Monday. These were kids who are deemed behavior problems. I spoke to them about how their behavior mirrors that of what Ive seen of the typical inmate. I thought my efforts were futile. However, this morning I had a student come to me and ask, Mr Persons, what do I need to do to pass your class? This same student sat quietly Monday while I was talking. I asked him why all of a sudden he wanted to pass my class. He replied, Mr. Persons, I dont want to go to prison. Why do I teach when I have an MBA? Bc I want to help these kids who are ignorant to the fact that there are ties between their behavior and their future, or lack thereof. Ive seen the other side of the fence and I know what type behavior got them there. Is this job demanding? A lot more than prison was. I was reminded this morning of the why. When you lose your why, you lose your way.
