I remember that day. November 22nd 1963. I was in Ms. Robert Fountains class. It was after lunch as we were in Social Studies class. Some one came to the door as we were about to begin the class. Ms.Fountain left the room, closing the door behind her. After about 5 minutes she came back into the class pushing a TV on a stand. With a dazed look on her face she told us that the president had been shot in Dallas Texas and that his condition was grave. We were all in disbelieve . She told us that we will watch history unfold before our eyes here on TV.She turned the TV on and CBS was broadcasting the events as they came out. Walter Cronkite was on the air. Giving the possible accounts of the terrible deed by whom we didnt know at that time. Then the tears begain as the word was that the President didnt make it. The news footage of those waiting outside the hospital was riveting. The people all crying. Some in a daze. The last two classes were all of us staring at the TV in total disbelieve. We had questions. Ms.Fountain couldnt possibly answer. No one could for that matter. Still no one can really say why Lee Harvey Oswald shot President Kennedy. HE had the perfect location to do it from. He worked at that book depository so he was supposed to be there. Being a X Marine he knew how to use a weapon. This was possibly the only thing he knew how to do correctly. Our innocence was forever lost on that day. The children of the Greatest Generation were growing up and that day was the key to our growth. Our world wasnt so save and perfect as we all realized it to be. The Cuban Missle crisis was later revealed just how close we came to nuclear war at out back door. Im not sure how much of an impact that day had im my life. It was a historical event that did change many ways we conducted ourselves. Much like the Sept. 11 attacks changes us. Maybe we need to be more alert about things around us. But we are human and we tend to get into a routine that in the end jumps up to bite us. Those times back in the 60s were a troubled time, but we survived them. Hope to God we can survive the coming times that are before us. Gods will, we can if we look to him for guidance.
