I shared with him something Id heard at the reunion. One of the guys was talking about a short exchange that had taken place between a golfer and his caddie out on The Old Course of St. Andrews, Scotland. The two men were sitting on the stone wall beside the fourteenth tee box, waiting for the group in front to clear the fairway when the golfer told his caddie that America as a society would collapse without a strong working class. His company made some kind of chrome part for the automobile industry. For almost fifty years he employed over six hundred people working three shifts. Two years after his son took over the company he moved the operation somewhere in Asia where he could pay workers eighty-eight cents a day. This enabled the son to earn an extra eleven percent profit a year. For eleven percent more profit, he put those good American workers out into the street, my boy did, the man told his caddie. I dont blame him for being greedy, we all have our share of greed in us. What I blame him for is being unpatriotic.
