I simply dont understand housing/rental prices any more. If you think of the kind of person who would normally live in a studio apartment, do you think of a person who can afford $2,000 or more a month for a STUDIO APARTMENT? I just dont get it. A friend of mine excitedly posted on FB this morning that there is an available studio for rent near the Castro in SF, and its $2,000 a month. I was horrified. If rent is supposed to be 1/3 of your income, no more, this is a $75,000 a year person renting a studio apartment? Why? How are prices like this even feasable? I mean, what is that, $8/sq ft, compared to the national average of about $2/sq ft? What kind of salaries do they pay in SF to cover those prices? I live in Los Angeles, in Koreatown, in a studio, for $815/month plus utilities, no parking, and thats in a dingy but not unsafe place, where it regularly takes me an hour to find parking. I work for a nonprofit, and make JUST enough to get by on. In the area near my office, West Hollywood, studios regularly rent for $1,500 - $2,000. I really just dont get it. Would you pay $2,000 a month for this: sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/4560931384.html
