I subscribe to the philosophy of Humanism. I believe that we are lucky to have come about in the swirl of the universe. I believe that because of the incredible rise of conscious and thinking life on our planet, we have a duty to further the human race, to support and improve all people. I believe our status as highly evolved beings gives us a responsibility to care for other living creatures and to respect the environment. I view the Scientific Method to be the way in which opinions and truths are recognized, if not in practice, then at least in spirit. I believe we are culpable for our own mistakes, and the mistakes we make as a society are ours to rectify. I believe all people should be equal in the eyes of one another. I believe ideals must be upheld, but at the same time, they must not be sacrosanct. We must always be willing to study, question, explore, and experiment. We must be willing to admit we are wrong, we must be happy to learn. I do not believe there is a being who created the universe or controls my destiny. I know my beliefs should not be forced upon another, but know I have a right to express myself and bring about change through the slow and inexorable process of stating my beliefs and backing them up with reason. Change comes from the smallest movements, not through force or coercion. I believe religion should be protected, but only so far as the individual is concerned. To ban religion would be to go against my beliefs in the right of the individual. However, I believe religion should not hold sway over policy, legislation, education, or the way we treat one another. I believe intellectualism, secular ethics, and personal philosophy are necessary to every person alive. I believe the future is important. I believe we have a duty to reach for the stars, both literally and figuratively. I believe I have every right to my opinions, as long as they remain logical and accepting of good reason. I believe I have every right to express them, even the duty to do so.
