I sympathize with what people want to achieve with all these protests. However, they are going to completely fail to achieve it - not from a lack of effort but from failing to understand what is actually creating poverty. Companies like Walmart do not create poverty; they in fact help prevent it. Yes, they can cause small businesses like mom and pop to close their doors, but this is from competitive prices and not from some inherent evil. Those very same competitive prices help small communities save money. For example, you can go to one of these local stores and buy groceries for X amount of money, yet can spend only half for the same groceries at a larger store. Yes, mom and pop can keep their business but the rest of the community has that much less. You must also understand that money saved with competitive prices means money spent elsewhere in the community. Not to mention the fact mom and pop only employ mom and pop, when Walmart employs a much greater number.
