I think many hikers get ITBS without knowing what it is...they think theyve twisted their knee or have some mysterious knee pain. They are quick to slap on a knee brace, which (in my opinion) makes ITBS worse. If the pain is on the outer part of the knee and it hurts on downhill steps, look into ITBS. In general, a great idea is to do your homework on common hiker injuries and ailments (ITBS, Plantar fasciitus, giardia, lyme disease) before starting a hike so you can prevent them and to know what symptoms to look for. runnersworld/injury-treatment/treating-itbs
