I think women have some inherent advantages over men. They communicate and share experiences with one another in such a way that they are forewarned of the changes that take place as they age. Men, on the other hand, experience the aging process alone and each of us is completely surprised by the things that happen. As an example, several years ago, I noticed that as my hairline began to recede, my ears compensated by growing hair – thick jack in the beanstalk type growth. I had to buy a special razor to avoid looking like a werewolf. There are numerous other examples that I could cite that will horrify you younger men, but the most alarming change that takes place is what I call the “attack of the blob”. I’ve always stayed in fairly good physical shape. Over the years, I have gone through several phases – lifting weights, running marathons, joining a gym…etc. And it probably helped that I have never gotten away from actual physical labor, and as a result, stayed in good shape. However, several days ago, I noticed that the individual parts of my midsection were no longer as well defined and toned as they once were. Everything is starting to blend in together – I’m not sure I have hip bones anymore – and the resulting appearance is of lumpy jelly – the attack of the BLOB! I fully intend to fight this monster, and will keep you younger men advised once I find the solution. In the meantime, don’t be surprised by the aging process - communicate with your brothers, fathers, uncles and grandfathers!
