I thought that this was a good link to share as the subject is covered in our Canine Behaviour Diploma Course (yes, team HURRAH are getting the smarts) ;) The pack theory was based on a case study conducted in the 1940s by scientist Rudolph Schenkel. It stated that the wolf pack lived by the rules of dominance and submission, and that the prime purpose of pack members was to attempt to take over leadership within the group. There was emphasis on the male wolf that held the role of leader, and the same emphasis on the female of a similar position. Dogs are not wolves, and neither are they human. They are a species in their own right. Scientists are quickly learning that human and dog thinking is more similar than we originally thought. In reality the way a dog learns and behaves is closer to how humans do than it is to how a captive wolf pack under stress behaves. It is such findings that have led to the scientist attempting to withdraw his findings from public circulation. HURRAH only uses positive reinforcement trainers to work with their pack. Thank you Dog Guru New Zealand and K9 Services NZ- Dog Training & Behaviour for your support.
