I walked past Euston Circus tonight, and theyve really made a horrible mess of the redesign of it. As far as I can see, its MUCH WORSE for both pedestrians and bicycle riders than it was before. Pedestrians - to cross Gower Street from the Wellcome Trust to the hospital, you have to first cross over onto the island, and then back over again. I didnt, because why cross two roads when you want to cross one... but almost got caught out because -- For some reason the bit of A400 in front of the hospital is 2-way with traffic cones separating the two lanes. Which is weird and confusing. Theyve taken out all the cycling infrastructure, and replaced it with nothing except for a few ASLs, which in 2 minutes I saw several motorists RLJ to block. The short section of segregated cycle lane is gone - now you have to share a very narrow lane with buses and probably everything else, it wasnt very clear. I saw a couple of people riding bicycles across and it was hair-raising to watch in each direction - the wide expanse of tarmac encourages motorists to pull alongside / try to overtake the bicycles and squeeze them against the curb when they rejoin the roads. Turning left from TCR onto Euston Road, the angle is so tight (which is good because it forces motorists to slow down), but is bound to cause conflict between bikes and motors as there isnt a bypass for bicycles anymore. If you want to be safe, probably best to get off and walk around this junction. If the rest of the junction redesigns are going to be like this, theyll be better off scrapping the plans and saving our money. It does look a bit prettier though :)
