I want to end the week by noting two cultural highlights involving Irans architecture and literature, one marks a great loss and the other treasures hope. The revered Hooshang Seyhoon passed away on May 26th in exile, in the city of Toronto. Though many may not have known Seyhoon by name, they have seen the iconic designs and architectural landmarks that he has created in his lifetime. Lovers of art history and poetry may have seen majestic structures, harmonizing design, color and calligraphy to memorialize Irans legendary poets, Hafez, Ferdowsi, and Khayyam and other historic figures. I invite you to memorialize this ingenious artist and his passion for Irans architecture by viewing some of his work and Irans landmarks. Loss of Mr. Seyhoon would have been harder to bear had I not been filled with hope and pride following my visit to the fabulous The Library of Congress, itself an architectural marvel. Thanks to visionary and generous philanthropists such as Ms. Nazie Eftekhari, a remarkable exhibit entitled A Thousand Years of the Persian Book is currently showcased at this venue. The exhibit features handwritten manuscripts of the Shahnameh and other masterpieces of Iranian literature and poetry. Interesting to note that this exhibit features the diversity of Irans religions highlighting Zoroastrian book of Avesta and Psalm of David in Persian and Hebrew on gold leaf calligraphy among others. Im lucky to be an American citizen of Iranian Jewish heritage, blessed with over 2500 years of history and free to express my religious/societal beliefs and even my poor photography! Shabat Shalom.
