I want to share this photo with you on behalf of one of our members, Laura. Laura (left) and Claire were best friends. At only 30 years old Claire suffered what doctors thought was a severe migraine for 2 weeks before passing away from a brain tumor. Claire was a registered organ donor and donated 4 of her organs, 1 to a man in his 60s and 3 to people in their 20s. Laura, along with Claires brother Edd and close friend Rob have created the registered charity MADATHLON, to raise money for life preserving equipment in hospitals. They have donated a cooling machine to a hospital costing over £10,000. This helps relieve any head trauma and swelling to the brain. In addition to this amazing fundraising which they do through all kinds of sports activities, they also try to raise awareness of organ donation and encourage people to not only register but also ensure they discuss their opinions with close family members, as once you have passed your wishes can actually be overruled by family members. It strikes me how this simple yet tragic story could so easily be any one of us, weve all suffered from a headache / migraine at some point? And it also strikes me how brave and strong Claires loved ones are, to bring such positive changes for others, from such a heartbreaking time of theirs. I have worked with Laura for a couple of weeks in organising the event and her ability to remain so upbeat and cheerful about an event that must bring back some very painful memories is inspiring and has made me want to give more and more. The urge to help others is infectious and we welcome anyone who can help us to do more. This charity really does help people who are suffering and organ donation really does saves lives.
