I want to take a moment to talk about Legacy... What is it? To me its just a sum total of an individuals integrity. How effective or lasting it is is dependant upon how true they are to themselves. Who they are and who they say they are. Integrity comes from the same route word as integer. Those of you who love math know that an integer is a whole number; no fractions. Hence someone with integrity is a whole person and has no fractions. They are not one way with people and the opposite in private. They dont just preach, but practice what they preach. And every day you spend being a whole person. Every day you spend being yourself. Leads to you impacting someone else. Now back to Legacy, its built on integrity which is a persons character. Character is the sum total of a persons principles. Now what are principles? Principles are what you do when nobody is looking. What happens behind the selfies. The tears shed that no one else sees. The work put in that does not get logged into your paycheque that you do anyway. The world may not see it but God does. Now how long something lasts, its Legacy is dependant upon its foundation. So in turn, the impact you will leave on the earth is directly correlated with what you do when no one is watching. Your integrity. This goes far beyond your immediate footprint. Whether you like it or not you leave a Legacy. Everything you do, will resonate with someone. In a good way or a bad one. Whether or not a young black man gets gunned down, or given the benefit of the doubt can get painted by how I choose to carry myself daily. Whether or not that a girl gets hired for a job may depend on how hard the last girl chose to work when her boss was away on vacation. Why am I typing all of this? Well its simple, Legacy. A man by the name of Stuart Scott died yesterday. Ive seen em on TV a couple of times. Hes a cool cat, but to be honest to you he meant nothing to me emotionally. Ive never met him. Ive never talked to him in person. I cant even remember the last time I watched him work. I heard all day about the authenticity of the mans character but it wasnt until I saw this video of the man speaking that I felt it... And it was then that I realized someone truly special was gone. Tell me how a man who I know next to nothing about can cause a grown man to cry profusely for 30 mins. Its simple... Legacy. You see although Ive seen what he did on the screen, in the moments I spent wailing away in the dark it was the intangible things done off screen that resonated with me. You see when a man or women with integrity speaks, you know it. You can sense their authenticity oozing through them. Although you dont see what was done behind the scenes, you can feel it. Because like a tree cant hide its fruits a person cant hide their character. Like I said character is all about your principles and your principles are what you do when no one is watching. #CanYouDigIt It is today that I realize that death is the most beautiful part of life. Because as I witness his passing I came to terms with the fragility of my own life, and embraced it. You see there is no way that Stuart could have ever guessed that all the hard work hed put in to get him to this particular platform to be able to speak to theses people could ever inspire a young designer like myself to be myself. And by be myself I mean be the real me. All the time, everywhere. No fractions. Whether at church work or the gym be a man of integrity. Yet by living with integrity he inspired me to be a man of integrity. Not for my own selfish ambitions but for the next person who will be inspired when its my turn to do the same; die.
