I was 18 years old when I left Milwaukie for the University of Oregon. Junior year of college, I got my first apartment in Springfield. Spent the summer after my junior year in Grants Pass. After graduating, I spent the summer in Bend, OR (half the time renting a room in a house, the other half in my grandmas guest room) before moving to Sonora, CA for my first newspaper job. I had four places during my three years there; the first was a large apartment in a historic building, the second was a super-ghetto unit in a slummy duplex, the third was a room a local bartenders home and the fourth was this old Victorian home with windows that rattled and banged during stormy weather. Then, I moved in with this girl Id met at the town karaoke bar (a cool gal now known as Jane Pez) when I got my next newspaper job in Merced, CA. Wed only planned on having one apartment there, but we moved to a second place after our cars were broken into five times and one was stolen and stripped. Less than two years after moving to Merced, we were off to Everett, WA, where Id hoped my next newspaper job would bring me closer to my family, but three years of weekend shifts kept that from happening. We lived in this crappy duplex in Everett before landing a gig as property managers on Capitol Hill in Seattle. The apartment thing was interesting (and I was a pretty good landlord, when push came to shove), but left Capitol Hill and moved to Mill Creek when Janes daughter (raised by Janes mom) temporarily moved in with us. That we suddenly had a teenager motivated us to buy a house in Lynnwood, where we experienced the joy of barbecues, family dinners and a really cool neighbor who Id often chat with over the fence. Then the daughter moved back in with grandma, and we were left in a house, just us. We realized we were tired of moving around so much and that we wanted a family of our own (which isnt as simple as it is for most people, because health issues during our time in Everett left my wife unable to have kids). So, we hatched a plan. We sold our house. We moved into a little apartment in Mill Creek and put most of our stuff in storage. We spent the last several months planning, waiting, and imagining. Which brings us to this moment. 2015 is going to be epic.
