I was a big football fan as a kid. Loved my baseball and football cards. Loved Bert Jones and Lydell Mitchell and Stan White. Then Irsay pulled the team out of town and I have never felt the same about football since. Lets face the horrible truth, Modell pulled an Irsay and did the same thing to Cleveland that Irsay did to Baltimore (but at least the Browns legacy stayed where it belonged, in Cleveland, the Indianapolis Colts still makes me cringe). Ray Lewis was a great football player, but the murder ordeal was horrific. The Ray Rice mess is yet another example of the disaster that modern sports has become. Greed and thuggery are far too commonplace, and the idolatry of professional athletes has gone off the deep end of reasonableness. You would think that we would have come further as a society than we have. I am at least partially boosted in my opinion of the human race by the outpouring of outrage over Rice and the leagues handling of this matter. Maybe this will spur some long lasting change. I doubt it, but maybe there is hope.
