I was curious about Henry Horde, the builder of St. Annes Church, - TopicsExpress

I was curious about Henry Horde, the builder of St. Annes Church, so using ancestry, I did some research. The best piece of information came from an article in the Menominee County Journal from 2007. Henry Horde was born in the Somme in France about 1826, and married Felice Herieux also of France. They came to the US, and settled in the Peshtigo Harbor area, eventually moving to Menominee and building the house where McDonalds now stands. Horde reportedly worked for the Louis Young Planing Mill. When the French Canadian community wanted to build a church, they approached Horde, seeking to purchase a portion of his land. He and his son, Scylla, then bid on the church. Horde has been an architect in France, but appears to have worked as a carpenter in the US. Around this time, his wifes health began to fail and she requested that she be buried under the church. Horde also sold his home to the parish for use as a rectory and at some point after finishing St. Annes, moved to California. It appears that Horde remarried some time later and oddly enough, his second wife is listed as a Felicita in the California census. Records indicate he divorced and moved to Menominee to live out his years with a daughter. Riverside Cemetery records list his first wife, but I cant find him there. At any rate, his son designed and built churches, including Most Precious Blood in Stephenson, but died in 1912 in an auto accident in Stephenson.
