I was discussing religion with a Christian today and we volleyed - TopicsExpress

I was discussing religion with a Christian today and we volleyed back an forth a bit in friendly kind of way. As our conversation progressed, I noticed that his belief was centered around his mother, who had died a few years earlier. He talked about how great she was and I believed him. Again and again, when I would ask about why he believed he would return to talking about his mother. I think the thought of not seeing their loved ones keeps more people from questioning their faith than any other factor. Just the thought that their loved ones are actually gone forever is enough to emotionally shake up a Christian. Our conversation progressed to a point where he said that even if I could show him proof the Bible was fake, he would still believe. Since most Christians dont read the texts anyway, their faith is not normally based on the text but on individual and admittedly selfish reasons such as emotional needs. No amount of logic would move a theist like this. In a sense, I was asking him to let go of his mother and any other loved ones who had already passed, something he was not prepared to do. I could see the emotion involved and so I relented having realized this.
