I was luxuriating in being unplugged most of the weekend but have a lot of movies to remark on: Tommy Lee Jones The Homesman was a revelation. Astonishingly shot in glorious Panavision and a Master Class in acting by all - and I HATE frontier / cowboy stuff; Foxcatcher is creepy and downbeat, though Steve Carell surprises as the demented rich kid; the multicultural reimagining of Annie is an aural and visual delight, terrifically cast, and looking to snare the family trade for the next month - and I HATE musicals; Wild is an emotional and spiritual blockbuster that blew me away and will make anyone cry; having seen The Ten Commandments - twice! - on the big screen as well as countless times on TV (and like most folks in Christendom know the story rather well) Exodus was a story-telling triumph, the narrative delving into every nook and cranny to deliver surprise after surprise while the visuals (esp. of the visitations of the curses) are a sensation. Only the musical score fails to deliver the epic sweep the rest of the film delivers in spades. An old Hollywood salty dog whod already seen Selma told me it and David Olewayos MLK will win the Oscars next February, but he agreed with me barring that, Exodus may sweep the ceremony.
