I was reading some Sufi poetry this morning and got inspired to write this. Perhaps you would like to add to it. The pattern goes something like: when...(happens) or someone asks ... (do something tangible to illustrate it - like a metaphor or object lesson) Like This by Peter van Gorder (inspired by Rumi – a Sufi mystic) If anyone asks you, “How did I get here?” Hold dirt in your hands drop in a seed, water it, hold it up to the sun and say, Like this. If anyone asks, “How can I find God?” Open the door and walk through it, Or open a window and welcome the fresh air and say, Like this. There is a soul that lives on after the body perishes, When someone doesn’t believe that, Go to a car junkyard and sit in the driver’s seat Pretend to drive, Get out and walk away. Like this. I am a candle burning bright in a dark room Put me on a candlestick to light your way Like this When someone is bored Dip a brush in paint and boldly put a stroke on fresh paper Like this If anyone wonders how Jesus raised the dead, don’t try to explain the miracle. Kiss me on the lips. Like this. Like this. When someone asks what it means to be enlightened Turn on a light and say Like this When we die It will be packing our bags and moving to a new locale Like this If someone comes in tears, and asks, “Why did my loved one die?” Weep and love them Like this When you call your friend on the phone They will answer Like this When someone quotes the old saying, “What goes around comes around.” Turn around and embrace them. Like this When the morning sun transforms the dew into diamonds It is telling us what we shall be when we let the light of the Son in. Like this When my loved ones come back from their travels They’ll poke their head around the edge of the door and appear suddenly to surprise us. Like this.
