I was reading this thing on the internet... i had traced Perfect Circles song Passive. found the lyric. devastating. ok so then there is a utube of the singer and Tori Amos. so then i follow a thread to a 2010 tori fans blog who mention me - that said i said that Tori sounded like Kate Bush, until she found her voice, and that offended Tori fans, who still liked my work even though that was a very Joni thing of me to say how Tori sounded like me. I laughed. One said I am so good and so unknown. I thought, heck shes right. I Am unknown, now, virtually. Understand, those two Rolling Stone covers - yes two in two years did not matter one bit ten years later. so all we have is the progeny, who honor us by talking about our work. Pearl Jam bringing on Neil Young... that was righteous. do you remember that uh Goddess thing, the Canadian? I was not offered, and was refused a slot on that tour. They would not have me, but they invited just about every other girl singer in the business. well every other white singer. with the exception of Tracy Chapman. I think. we work in a business that seems to want to undervalue women specifically. Tom Petty sounded like Dylan, Dylan noticed the similarity, heck. who didnt. And Steve Tyler, hes not like Jagger? no ? how bout the many Thom Yorke spinoffs? that no one spends time comparing men to other men means that they consider it a natural evolution, I guess.. but women must compete with one another. Women are the intinerant guests, they seem to have to live with comparisons - as if we cannot see them as themselves, whole and unique, and must have some other thing, name, in order to explain why we are discussion them in the first place. I guess I do sometimes say hey those are my gloves give em back. . as you get older and your .. your culture mutates into some new thing.. One of the few things is that you get to be remembered, mentioned.. especially by people who do not imitate but are inspired by your originality. who cares? we do. the second is that you are actually still working, making money. that feels good yes? and the last is that ..you feel like you did a good job. well of course thats the most important, the one that makes the others not hurt. If I Know I did a good job, then I know in my heart that everything is in its proper place. I have that now. sometimes, like James Brown, you find yourself yelling HEY, I DID THAT FIRST. and people are embarrassed. fact is he DID do it first. and he wants to be sure you know - he did it Best.... Not one of these musical sisters owes another, we are all uniquely connected and rare. but it sure would be nice if we sent a little flower of respect, between us, once in a while. so...here is mine.. It doesnt matter if they all know your name. As long as You do, the ones who need your song will find it. believe in your higher calling, be unfettered by the tide of fame and flattery. your have been blessed to be a part of the choir, and when the saints go marching in, youll be there. believe it. you And James Brown.
