I was so busy being disorganised about how to run the astronomy - TopicsExpress

I was so busy being disorganised about how to run the astronomy and poetry at the same time that I forgot to do my talk about why I think Solar aid are one of the best charities out there. So lets just put it like this: We raised $135. With the $95 from a previous event that is enough to provide subsidised solar power lights for 21 African families. These will replace kerosene lamps. Since the typical rural family in Africa spends 10-25% of their income on kerosene this will make a huge difference to the amount of money they have. The quality of light will be better, improving the childrens chance of studying successfully. A kerosene lamp in the home is the healthy equivalent of two packs of cigarettes a day (even when they dont cause the house to burn down) so it is like we stopped close to 100 people smoking. And since kerosene lamps emit a lot of black carbon, which is a far more potent global warming force than CO2, molecule for molecule, weve also made a much bigger difference to the environment than turning off a few lights.
