I was stupefied yesternight when I saw online the pictures of a helpless Governor Rotimi Amaechi identifying himself before police guards who blocked an entrance to Government House, Port Hacourt. What an irony. A governor who is the' Chief Security Officer' of the state having to drop of his car in his convoy to 'parade himself for identification' before a unit of police guards. His entreaties that he should be allowed to enter into his abode after a long day after public service fell on deaf ears. The police 'Maigadis' are on strict orders from above[Abuja] that Amaechi should not be allowed to use that entrance again. This development portends great danger for democracy in Nigeria. All men of goodwill who really cherish good governance, freedom of speech, freedom of association, respect for the rule of law, must irrespective of their religion and political leaning rise against this descent into totalitarianism in our country. If this country will be safe for democracy, the onerous task of making it so, lies with the people. Governor Rotimi Amaechi has executive powers as guaranteed by our constitution to administer Rivers State. He should not for whatever reason be under the whims and caprices of individuals or groups in or outside the state in the exercise of his constitutional powers. The warped idea that a 'student/headmaster relationship must exist between State Governors and the President is alien to our constitution and the federal system of government that we run. We, the people MUST put a permanent stop to this political rascality that has its origin from Aso Rock.
