I watched the movie The Butler the other night. It is a true story about the life and times of Eugene Gaines who served as a butler at the White House for 34 years under 8 presidents. He was born in Georgia and worked on a cotton field. One day when he was a young child he was working in the fields with his father and the owner of the plantation or an overseer raped his mother and when his father interfered he was shot and killed. The wife of the plantation owner felt bad for the child and made him a domestic servant where he learned to be a butler. He moves on to Washington DC and works in a large Hotel and because of his good skills he develops as a Butler and being in the right place at the right time, he gets the opportunity to work at the White House from 1957 until lates 80s. The movie details his life working in the White House and major political issues that occurred including civil rights movements and how the various presidents dealt with such issues. It is a good movie. I recommend you seeing it but I do not rate it nearly as highly as Twelve Years a Slave.
