I went along to the East Gosforth Ward meeting last night where the proposals for the Strategic Cycle Route along Gosforth High Street/Great North Road were discussed. Jon Higgins, transport planner from the council, was in attendance along with our friends from STURR (who heckled continually and generally made fools of themselves). It transpires that the council may hopefully have listened to concerns about the Salters Road junction as these are going back out for re-consultation (another chance to try to make them more forward-thinking, Katja!). Also included in the consultation released this weekend will be the plans for the High Street. Jon outlined three options: 1) A peak-time Red Route along the High Street with parking/loading bays for deliveries etc. 2) Redesigning the High Street to implement a bi-directional cycle route along the western side with traffic reduced to single carriageway on the other and a buffer strip of parking spaces in between. 3) Do nothing and leave things as they are. I am sure none of these are ideal but I hope those of us who live in Gosforth will engage fully with the consultation process to ensure the best outcome for cyclists. Jon Baileys link below gives more information for those who dont live in Gosforth so wont be receiving the letters. Im not sure how the Newcastle Cycling Campaign envisages interacting with the consultation but I will be giving them my input as a resident. It seems that after posting information about these plans and a report of the council ward meeting on the STURR Facebook page I have now been banned and all of my comments removed, so if someone would like to take up the baton over there to counter their misinformation and scaremongering then that would be handy!
