I will be raising the issue of energy bills in Parliament today. The latest figures show the profits of the big six energy companies have increased to £105 per household. Meanwhile the number of households in fuel poverty is projected to increase to 2.33 million, and the fuel poverty gap – the difference between people’s bills and what they can afford – has grown to £480. A Labour Government will put a stop to unfair price rises by freezing energy bills until 2017. We will work over this time to reform the energy market and create a new energy watchdog with powers to police the market, including the power to force energy companies to cut their prices when wholesale costs fall and the power to revoke energy suppliers’ licences when they repeatedly mistreat customers.
