I wonder how much they are saving? one person in jail for one year - TopicsExpress

I wonder how much they are saving? one person in jail for one year is at least $17,000 and easily can be up to $70,000 for very poor health care delivered to them by conditions made worst by being in prison. 50% of people with mental illness have addiction problems and many of them are in prison because of their mental illness and they do almost always need(what is almost always even more poorly given given care, if any) of at least of the $77,000 rate, serve their full term on minor charges, are given no effective help and are discharged worst, almost guaranteeing their return to incarceration. So at even a modest 40% of prisoners who could be discharged that is 4 out of ten people. Lets be simple and say at and average of $50,000 per person saving per yr. Just 4 people released would be a saving of $200,000 a year. Most outpatient treatment especially non-residential are well below $5000 a year and it isnt always for ever or even year after year, people recover, AA has been proving that for what over a century? Then dont forget the state legislatures, in order to save money they cut funding for whatever pitiful recovery programs they did ever fund! I know I suffer from a public school education that has never had the money for good results, but even so not spending $200,000 for only 4 people in prison for nothing at all or any good for anyone, less $10,000 or less for outpatient treatment for a year saves me, OK ( you, and you and you too!) at least $190,000 a year! Remember that is only 4 people, how much would 40% of 100 people, or 40% of 1,000, or 40% of the one million we have in jails and prisons in the USA be? Think of the tax cut we could all have! How much does your state spend on 40% of the people they have locked up? Wouldnt you like that in your pocket?
