I wrote this at todays writers workshops. The title comes from a song from The Beach Boys Smile album. Heroes and Villains. In the Tower District, the heroes and villains are on Facebook, more specifically, the Please Help Stop Crime in Tower Facebook page. The heroes report the villains, and the villains log onto Facebook to see what the heroes report about the villains they encounter. Sometimes these two worlds blend into another, and the heroes and villains become indecipherable. For example, one day, while on my morning walk, a skinny, gangster looking kid in baggie shorts and a backwards Raiders cap, rolled up on me. He asked me for my shoe size. “Why?” I asked with apprehension. He pulled out a pair of brand new Nike shoes and when I told him I wasn’t interested, he opened his backpack and revealed an Iphone and charger. I nodded no and gestured toward the other opposite side of the street. “I’m heading out.” He left me alone, but then, he continued to roll past me on his BMX which looked awfully like a bike that was recently reported stolen on the neighborhood crime page. He stopped at a young couple on their way into Starbucks. “Want to buy a puppy,” he asked? He pulled the puppy out of his tote bag! “He’s half-pit half Siberian Husky,” said the Tower tweaker. The puppy was so cute, the female gushed. Her boyfriend reluctantly pulled out a twenty and gave it to the skinny homeboy on wheels.
